4 writing tips to engross your readers
Hey! Today’s the last post of blogging basics: 4 writing tips to engross your readers.
1. Don’t elongate your sentences
Long sentences can cause unnecessary confusion to readers. Clear, concise sentences get your ideas through much better than fancy vocabulary. For example, “In order to” can be replaced with just “to”. Both of them have the same meaning, but “to” sounds a lot more concise.
2. Keep changing your sentence length
While researching, I found this image:
The concept is very simple. If all your sentences are approximately the same length, they begin to seem mechanic and monotonous. On the flip side, writing sentences with varying lengths create a sense of rhythm in your post.
3. Use a thesaurus
This is a tip that comes in handy very often. When you’re writing about a certain topic, you can often end up overusing words. A thesaurus can show you synonyms for a word, which stops your vocabulary from becoming repetitive. I recommend Power Thesaurus as it is user-run and updated by the community.
4. Don’t forget to take breaks
When writing for a long time, you start to feel burnt out. This strips you of your motivation, which is never a good thing. When you’re burnt out, you also find it difficult to judge the quality of your writing because your brain wants to get it over with. Whenever you feel like you’re losing motivation, always take a break. This can be anywhere from thirty minutes to 12 hours if you like.
